Next, After completing both tests, find a hiring department and apply for a Fire Fighter position to then attend Fire Academy for training and earn up to 29 college credits!

Upon joining a partnered department, you may be enrolled to take approved college programs to earn an additional 54 college credits as part of your training to qualify for an associates degree in Fire Science at the programs you department accepts

Fire Fighter Journey Path
Step 1
(0-2000 OJT)
After hiring on, and signing the Agreement Form, you will attend Fire Training Academy (academy varies by department), where you will earn 29 College credits and go through the fundamentals of Firefighting. After academy, you will begin to earn On-the-job (OJT) work hours under mentorship of a journey-level firefighter at your department. You may also start taking your required 5 Fire Emergency Service Higher Education (FESHE) courses, unless otherwise stated by your department. Talk to your department on how to enroll.
Step 2
(2001-4000 OJT)
As you approach the end of your first year as a firefighter, you will have completed your probation period and continue working in partnership with your department's journey-level firefighters. If you have not already begun taking FESHE classes, you may begin to take them and enroll, talk to your department on how to register.
Step 3
(4001-6000 OJT)
As you enter your third year/reach 4000 OJT hours, you will be more experienced as you continue working in your department and with journey-level firefighters. At this step, you should be nearing completed all 5 FESHE classes, earning up to an additional 54 college credits and have all of your certifications in your file from your academy. If you have not begun taking FESHE courses, reach out to your department to discuss how to ensure you can complete the courses before journeying out.
Journey-Level
Once you have completed all 5 FESHE classes and have obtained all of your certifications and reached 6000 OJT hours, you are eligible to journey-out. Some departments have additional requirements, be sure to talk to your department on if there are additional steps to take to journey-out. Once you have journeyed out, you will receive a certificate of completion and are now a mentor to Firefighters Steps 1-3. Congratulations! You made it!
